The background really conflicts with him... the bright, warm sun shining on the lively, growing trees. It's a nice background, but it's distracting from and conflicting with the model who is cold, dark, and depressed - relatively lifeless compared to the background.
To sum it up, I think it would be much more successful with a different background; one with much cooler and darker colors.
